General Project Description

This project involves the complete renovation of the Chinatown Him Mark Lai Branch Library at 1135 Powell Street, San Francisco, a registered historic landmark built in 1921. The renovation will restore the historic grandeur of the Main Reading Room by removing previous retrofits and completing a full building overhaul. The extensive scope includes selective demolition, new architectural finishes, sitework, structural updates (including Steel Plate Shear Walls and drilled micropiles), utilities, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, telecommunication, security, elevator, and audiovisual systems. Exterior improvements feature façade repair, historic façade restoration, roofing, and a new roof terrace. The project requires USGBC LEED Gold certification, adherence to local hiring policies, and hazardous materials abatement procedures for lead, asbestos, and other contaminants.
