General Project Description
This project involves the demolition and removal of 4 dockside container cranes located at Pier 96 in San Francisco. These massive cranes, approximately 170 feet tall, 80 feet wide, and 200 feet long, were originally built by PACECO and Star Iron & Steel, Co. in the early 1970s for container offloading and loading from cargo ships. They are now antiquated, outdated, inoperable, and require removal due to safety concerns. The work includes careful dismantling, hazardous materials abatement (including asbestos, lead, PCBs, mercury), and proper waste handling to clear the way for future redevelopment of Pier 96 wharf. The contract also includes provisions for construction sequencing, access, site security, noise and air quality controls, debris management, and compliance with local hiring and environmental regulations.
